Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a painful, progressive, and debilitating disease. If left untreated, it can cause permanent nerve damage. Commonly, this debilitating disease is treated with physical therapy, steroids, painful injections, and splints. When these therapies fail to bring relief, surgery is often the last resort and the only option left to the suffering patient. After surgery the patient will require postoperative rehab care and treatment. On the average, one can expect to spend approximately 2 to 3 months in postoperative treatment. Unfortunately, for the majority of patients suffering from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, these procedures and treatments end up in failure. The result is long term, chronic pain and disability.

  • Some 260,000 people undergo surgery in the USA for unresolved Carpal Tunnel.

  • After painful injections with steroids 65 to 90% of patients will have returning

  • Surgery for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome has an astounding failure rate of 57%.

  • Sex: Women are 3 to 5 times more likely to develop Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

  • A safe, effective treatment protocol, without drugs, without surgery resulted in enduring, significant pain relief in 91.6% of treated patients.

If you are having any or most of the symptoms associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or have been told that you must have surgery, the vital information about a treatment protocol that I have developed could save you many months or even years of pain and suffering. I was in a similar situation years ago. During the day I suffered from pain and paresthesia due to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. At night I would wake up with burning pain in my hand and wrist. Sometimes the pain would shoot up to my shoulder. My work required typing at the computer keyboard for hours at a time. The more time I spent on the keyboard, the more painful my hand and wrist would become.
Massage and physical therapy were not much help and only provided minimal and only temporary relief. Surgery was not an option and I began to treat myself with cold laser therapy and interferential therapy, a specialized type of electrical therapy.

After the first treatment the pain and tingling in my hand and wrist subsided significantly. That night, I was able to sleep without waking up with the burning pain that was destroying my restful sleep. I continued with this treatment on a daily basis and within a relatively short time all the symptoms subsided. At last I was free of pain. All the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome were gone. To this day the pain and suffering of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome has NOT returned.

If you have ever fallen asleep on your arm or hand, the sensation of “pins and needles” that you experience upon awakening is very similar to what people with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome experience. Some commonly seen symptoms are:

  • Numbness or tingling

  • Weakness in one or both hands

  • Hand and wrist pain

  • Pain extending to the elbow

  • Weak grip or difficulty carrying objects

  • Pain extending to the shoulder

  • Impaired fine finger movements

The degree of pain or inability to use your hands when carrying out normal everyday activities is in general a measure of just how severe the disease has progressed. If pain is present on a constant basis and is aggravated with simple tasks such as typing on a keyboard, the disease has now progressed to a moderate stage.

Many patients inform me that they often “loose their grip” and drop objects such as a cup of coffee. Office workers find it difficult to write with a pen or pencil and frequently drop them when the pain becomes too severe. By the time one has developed loss of grip strength and weakness, the disease has progressed to a severe stage.

Carpal Tunnel is a progressive and debilitating disease. It does NOT get better with time. The opposite is true. The longer you wait to start treatment, the worse it will get. If left untreated, this disease will progress from a mild stage to a severe stage. By the time this disease has progressed to the severe stage and you are having a loss of grip strength, you run a high risk of having permanent nerve damage. If the muscle at the base of your thumb is “shrinking” or wasting away, you have already sustained significant nerve damage. Regardless of which stage you may be at it is imperative that you undergo a comprehensive exam at start treatment as soon as possible.

On your first visit you will undergo the typical interview and history to determine if your symptoms are consistent with a Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. A physical examination of the neck, shoulders, elbows, hands and wrists is conducted. This way I can discover and rule out other disorders that can mimic Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Many doctors overlook the neck as a source of pain. Many patients have associated neck pain and it is extremely vital to treat the neck pain as well as the hand and wrist pain.

Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) studies of both upper extremities is then performed. In this study electrodes are placed on the hand, wrist, and upper arm. Electrical current is then applied and the speed with which the nerves conduct or transmit impulses is then measured by a computer designed for this purpose. The electrical impulses are slowed in the carpal tunnel due to compression of the median nerve. This is the definitive test to determine the diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome as well as to determine the severity of the disease.

Underlying metabolic conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disease, gout, inflammatory bowel disease have been found to be associated causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Therefore, it is vital that these conditions be verified or eliminated as the cause of your hand and wrist pain. At our clinic you will fill out a Metabolic Assessment Questionnaire that targets specific areas and will help us determine if you have symptoms that correlate with a metabolic condition such as the ones listed above. If your symptom survey reveals some positive indicators then we can proceed with some specific lab work. We will then collect either blood, urine, or saliva and send the specimen to a qualified Medical Laboratory for testing.

I have been able to produce an effective treatment solution to Carpal Tunnel neuropathy by combining six specific modalities. While some clinics specializing in the treatment of neuropathy such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may use two or three of these modalities, we are the only clinic to successfully use and implement these six modalities. First, Brain Based Therapy or Neurologically based spinal manipulation. Following a comprehensive neurological exam I can determine where interference within the Central Nervous System has occurred. A specific and individualized treatment plan to rebalance the nervous systems involved in peripheral neuropathy is prescribed.

Second, Meridian Therapy, often called non-needle acupuncture is utilized. As part of the comprehensive exam I utilize Digital Meridian Imaging to analyze the 12 major meridian/organ systems of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Specific Meridian Therapy is then formulated to restore balance and health. Third, Cold Laser Therapy has been well documented and verified in the medical literature as many clinical studies have proved that inflammation is decreased with the application of cold laser. Laser therapy also kick starts the healing process and regenerates damaged nerves. The laser machine I utilize is only available to licensed health care professionals. Fourth, MORA therapy. I underwent training with this therapy while studying in Germany with medical doctors that specialize in Functional Medicine. This therapy utilizes the patient’s own electromagnetic frequencies to heal the nervous system. Fifth, nutritional therapy. One of my specialties is clinical nutrition and I utilize specific nutrients that rebuild and regenerate damaged peripheral nerves. Herbal and homeopathic remedies are necessary to remove the toxins that are damaging your nerves. Sixth, ReBuilder. This research is based on extensive research conducted by Dr. David Phillips, Ph.D. This FDA approved medical device provides nerve stimulation and regeneration.
